This is my 9th year teaching Commercial Art at Odyssey. I truly love the subject and students. I work here only in the mornings (Periods 1-3) and in the afternoons I work at my own business as a graphic designer. I do a lot of work for Odyssey Schools like their website, newsletters, and other artistic projects like murals, posters and more. I have been a Commercial Art professional for over 25 years, so I have plenty of real-world experience to share with you. Visit my website at www.decographics.com to see samples of my work.
I like to keep my classes fun, creative, and positive. I look forward to seeing your ideas, talent, and knowledge grow this year. Please feel free to contact me anytime you need. 😊
The main goals of our class are
1) Learn the Adobe software to a level of being able to pass the certification exam.
Commercial Art 1 - Adobe Photoshop (Photo Editing)
Commercial Art 2 - Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Animate
2) Create projects to display in local art shows.
3) Build the Odyssey Yearbook
Pre-Requisites
1) You must have completed a DIT (general computers) class BEFORE starting Commercial Art 1. Please see me if you have not. You don't have to be an artist to take this class, but you should be good with computers.
2) You must have completed Commercial Art 1 (Photoshop) before taking any of the higher levels of Commercial Art.
Assignments/Projects
1) INSTRUCTIONS - Assignments will be posted on this website every week. Occasionally we have longer assignments but usually they start on Mondays and are due on Fridays. There are slides & videos to show you how to do them. This way you can work at your own pace and are able to jump back in if you are absent. I am here to help if you have questions!
2) ONE NOTE - All students will put their artwork in a Microsoft One-Note file and share the link. You will click the turn in spot on our website and fill out the form and paste in the link to your One-Note file.
3) FINISHED EARLY? - Even if you get done sooner than the assignment due date, you are expected to still keep working on your art to make it even better. If you want to do 2 pieces instead that’s also a great thing to do with your time. You may also work on your own artwork if there is something that interests you or work on a yearbook page. If you get done early and then stop working for something in this class then your grade will reflect that. Ask me about our choice board if you don’t know what to do. Never say you’re done and be caught doing nothing.
Supplies:
1) Flash Drive to store your files.
USB-C is the only USB option available on these new Mac computers.
(We recommend a USB flash drive that has both USB-A and USB-C as an option just in case you need to connect to another computer that doesn’t have USB-C available.)
Amazon purchase option HERE
2) Headphones with 3.5mm audio jack to listen to tutorials.
Grading
1) GRADE REPORTING - As requested, I am moving my gradebook from Canvas to Focus this year. I am prompt about my grading, so if I have not given you a grade in a week, feel free to check in with me to make sure it was turned in the right place.
2) EFFORT MATTERS - Your grade will reflect your effort. If you just throw something together quickly, don’t expect the same grade as someone who spends the full amount of time making something special. We have a choice board to use if you get done earlier than your classmates. Use ALL of your class time to get the best grade!
3) LATE WORK - If you have a valid reason I will accept your late work (accommodations, illness). Otherwise you should turn everything in on time which is usually Fridays. Even if you’re not done or happy with your work it’s best to turn in what you have and then ask me if you can improve later for a better grade. I almost always say yes to that!
4) EXIT TICKETS - This year you will turn in all your work via an electronic exit ticket. You will paste in a OneNote file link and answer some questions to check for understanding and self-reflect/grade. Go to the Turn-In text link on the bottom of each project thumbnail to access it.
CALCULATE YOUR OWN GRADE WITH THE RUBRIC I WILL USE FOR YOU HERE:
**Rubric Calculator**
Arrival
- When you arrive to class, put your backpacks and drinks on (or below) the table by the door. Don't bring anything to your desk.
- Read the instructions on the projector and/or our website to know what's happening that day.
- Check your computer for any damages and report them to the teacher right away so you don't get blamed for anything you didn't do.
Departure
- Wait for the teacher to dismiss you. Don't just run out the door.
- When you leave class, log out of the computer and push your chair under the desk.
- Leave your workspace clean for the next student.
Grade = Effort
You will see that up on our site every week to remind you that the amount of work and effort you put into your projects will determine your grade. You don't have to be the most amazing talented artist, but if you are working hard then your grade will reflect that. AND if you are the most amazing talented artist and you rush through your projects in a couple of days, you won't get a very good grade. Go to the CHOICE BOARD page if you get done early and don't know what to do.
YouTube / Gaming / Phone Distractions
Doing any of these things is prohibited! Don't think I don't notice just because I may not call you out. Your grade will suffer because I will take off points each time you do it and you can be suspended if you are warned and continue to do any of these things. I do watch your screens via LanSchool and IT watches / records your browsing history. NO VPN INSTALLS!
Homework for Other Classes
Remember this is NOT a study hall to get caught up with your Math or History homework. I will take points off your projects in here if you are doing other work.
Bell to Bell Work
Please stay seated and working from the time the bell rings and class begins to the time it rings at the end. Don't quit early and stand by the door please.
Integrity
Turning in work that is not your own creation will result in an F. Trust me, I can tell. It will be your responsibility to prove that you did the work if questioned by keeping copies of all the photos you use to create your artwork and having a layered file. You’ll turn in all the photos you use so I can see the transformation or show me your editable file if questioned. If you can not provide this then you will have to do the project again. Using AI (even if it's in the Adobe program is prohibited).
Lab Rules
FOOD/DRINK - Your computer desk is not an appropriate place to have snacks and drinks. Please ask the teacher if you need to eat and drink and if she says yes you can sit at the table at the front of the room. Clean up after yourself!
EQUIPMENT CHECK - Each day when you arrive, you should check your computer equipment for damages and report anything immediately so that the person that sat there before you will be to blame and not you.
