Press Command Shift 4 and drag a box around the area you want to capture.
The image will appear on your desktop. It will be named "Screenshot-date-time.png"

If your screenshot (Command Shift 4) does not work:
Click on the little apple menu at the top right of your screen.
Choose system settings.
Scroll down and choose Keyboard.
Find Keyboard Shortcuts button.
Make sure that "Save picture of selected area as a file" is checked!
